What Is The Best Commenting System For Blogger Blogs?

The default commenting system of Blogger Blogs is not a user friendly commenting system and normal people will hesitate to comment on your post if you are using default blogger commenting system. So what is the better alternative to default Blogger Commenting System?

Comment

Third Party Commenting System:

If you want to get more comments on your blog post then you can opt for third party commenting system. There are many third party commenting system available for blogger blogs like Intense Debate,Facebook Commenting System ,Disqus etc.

Why You should use Third Party Commenting System?

Every blogger who is blogging on blogspot platform should shift to Third Party commenting system as soon as possible or else you are going to loose valuable comments and traffic.
  • More Comments More Traffic-This is the new SEO Strategy:Yes you you heard right. The more comments you get the more boost you get in search engine ranking. It looks like after Penguin and Panda Updates google is giving more priority to words. The articles with more words are ranking higher on google than articles with fewer words.
  • So Should You Write Articles With More Words?-Answer is No.Articles with more words annoys readers and your readers will loose interest in reading the whole article. So the wise idea is to write a article with decent number of words i.e 500-700 words and get more comments on your article.Comments will also be considered as words for your articles,so the more comments you get greater will be your rank in search engines.

Best Third Party Commenting System for your Blog:

You have to choose better commenting system for your blog depending upon your blog niche.I would suggest some of the best comment systems keep reading......

Disqus(Highly Recommended):

disqus
Disqus is the Best Third Party Commenting System as of now for blogger blogs. You can remove it whenever you want to and you will not loose any of your previous existing comments as Disqus syncs its comments with the default commenting system of blogger which is one of the great feature of Disqus.Disqus not only syncs the comments but also imports all the existing comments on your blog to Disqus comments,so that you wont loose any of your existing comments.Currently this blog is also running disqus commenting system.
  • Cons Of Disqus:The only disadvantage is that it takes more time to load and thereby increases the loading time of your blog. However as visitors read the content first and then scroll down to read or leave a comment,in this period of time the comments get fully loaded. After Disqus 2012 has introduced the loading time has reduced to a great extent.

Facebook Commenting System:

facebook+commenting+system
If you have a very large number of facebook fans then I strongly recommend you to go for facebook commenting system. This doubles your traffic.Whenever a person comments on your blog using his facebook profile then a notification will be sent to all his friends that the person commented on your blog.Use it only if you have a very large number of facebook fans(say 5000+) or else keep reading.

Intense Debate:

intense+debate+comments
Intense Debate is the best commenting system for blogger blogs to get more comments.Intense Debate is a very good third party commenting system and doesn't takes much time to load.It has a very user friendly interface and you will see a very great improvement in your comment count after you moved to Intense Debate.Intense Debate offers many additional inbuilt plugins like comment luv which encourages readers to leave more comments on your blog.

Should you use Third Party commenting system or not?

Previously Disqus and  Facebook comments didn't get indexed in Google, which was one of the big drawback of Blogger Search Engine Optimization. But after Blogger SEO has introduced all the Third Party comments especially Disqus and Facebook comments are perfectly indexed in Google.I strongly recommend you to move to Disqus or Facebook Commenting system to boost the number of comments thereby boosting search engine ranking as well.

How to Fix Duplicate Content Issue in Blogger

  1. Are you facing duplicate content issue?
  2. Is your ranking getting lowered with increase of posts day by day?
  3. Did you got hit by Google Panda?
If any of the above questions is true then you must fight against duplicate content issue within the site.I already wrote a article on how to identify and remove low quality content from google but in this article we will be discussing how to fix this issue permanently.Duplicate content within the site is a big issue and most of the bloggers are not aware how to fix it.Even my blog ranking got lowered with duplicate content issue after moving to responsive theme.

How to Identify Duplicate Content:

  • Go to Google and search for site:yoursite.com.
  • This will show up the list of all the pages that are indexed in google.
pages+indexed+in+google
Site:alltechbuzz.net
Some times you may notice mobile version of pages and search results getting indexed in Google as follows.
  • yoursite.com/2013/04/keyword1-keyword2-keyword3.html?m=1
  • yoursite.com/2013/04/keyword1-keyword2-keyword3.html?m=0
  • yoursite.com/2013/04/keyword1-keyword2-keyword3.html/search?abcd
The content in such kind of pages resembles the content of the main url thereby forming duplicate content.

You can also find Duplicate content via Google Webmaster Tools:

  • Go to Google Webmaster Tools.
  • Now navigate to Optimization then HTML Improvements.
  • There you can find the list of all Duplicate Content.
checking+duplicate+content+via+google+webmaster+tools
Duplicate Content in Webmaster Tool
  • The most commonly faced problem is Duplicate Meta Description. In this article I will be explaining how to deal with this issue.

How to Fix Duplicate Content Issue?

Fixing duplicate content is a very big task and you must take care that this content wont get indexed again in future as well.

Remove Duplicate URL's from Google:

First and the foremost thing you have to do is to completely remove all the duplicate content from Google Index. To do this just follow the below steps.
  • Go to Google.com and search for site:yoursite.com
  • Now this will list you all the list of urls that are indexed in Google.
  • Find the urls that are ending with wrong extension like ?m=1 ,?m=0 etc.
  • Now open that page and copy the url of that particular page.
  • Then go to your webmaster tools then navigate to Optimization then Remove URL'S.
  • Then click on Create New URL Removal Request.
  • Then paste the url there and then submit.
  • When Google indexes your website for the next time those submitted urls must be disappeared from search results.

Step to Avoid Duplicate Content Getting Indexed in Google in Future:

After you are done with removing all the duplicate urls you have to make sure that these removed urls wont gets indexed in future as well.
What does this code do?
  • This code makes Google to index only those pages ending with ".html" and it blocks all those pages which are ending with urls like ".html?m=1" and ".html?m=0" etc.

Configuring URL Parameters in Google Webmaster Tools:

This step is optional.Avoid it if you are not confident enough to configure Webmaster Settings.
Google Webmasters provides an additional feature to configure url parameters that gets indexed in Google.Use this with precautions or else your whole website might get de-indexed.
  • In Webmaster Tools navigate to Configuration then URL Parameters.
  • You can see the url parameters as follows.
url+parameters+in+google+webmasters+tools
URL Parameters in Webmaster Tools
  • By default Google sets certain crawl value for each of these parameters.
  • Now the main issue is with mobile version parameter which is "m".
  • Click on edit and follow the settings shown below in the screenshot and save those settings.
mobile+parameter+setting
Mobile Parameter Settings
Though I configured url parameters using Google Webmaster Tool it doesn't seem to work in most of the cases. So it is suggested to follow the below methods as well.

Changing Robots.txt File:

Note:This is only for Advanced users.Use this only if you are using responsive theme or use this only if you are not able to fix this duplicate content issue after following all the other steps.
  • Open your Blogger Dashboard.
  • Then go to Settings then Search Preferences.
  • In Search Preferences enable custom robots.txt which will be disabled by default.
  • Enable it and paste the following code.
User-agent: Mediapartners-Google Disallow:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /
User-agent: *
Disallow: /*.html
Allow: /*.html$
Sitemap: http://www.alltechbuzz.net/feeds/posts/default?orderby=UPDATED
  •  In the above code replace www.alltechbuzz.net with your website url then save it.

 Custom Robots Header:

This is one more advanced feature provided by Blogger and must be used with proper care or else your blog might get completely deindexed from google.
  • Open blogger dashboard then Settings then choose Search Preferences.
  • Enable Custom Robots header Tags which is disabled by default and follow the below settings show in the screenshot.
custom+robots+header
Custom Robots Header for Blogger/Blogspot
  • If you are done with all the settings then save the settings to get into effect.

Conclusion:

If you are done with all the above steps then I am sure there wont be any duplicate content indexed in Google and you wont be facing this issue in future as well.
If you have any doubts then you can use the comment form below to ask your questions.
Cheers.Happy Blogging :)

How to Identify and Remove Low Quality Content from Google

I already wrote a complete article on How To Recover From Google Panda Effect, this article is a part of same series to explain "What is low quality content?".After a series of Google Panda Updates, now everyone is aware of the importance of high quality content.Previously webmasters used to think more the number of pages gets indexed in Google then more is the traffic but now things have changed.Even few low quality articles can lead to penalty like "One single apple spoiling the whole bunch".

Always Remember:"Quality is more important than Quantity"

How to Identify Low Quality Content?

There is a big question in every webmaster mind "What low quality/thin content actually means?".
Well if you are here with the same question then I am going to clear your doubt in this article.

1.Content with Very Few Words:

Even though most of them feel that the number of words of article doesn't matter it is wise to maintain a 500 words article.Sometimes you may not prolong a article to 500 words in such cases keep the article short and concise but get more comments on your post. All the words in the comments will be treated as content of the article.Accept only those comments which adds value to your blog.Spammy comments can harm the blog very badly.
So if you write a article with 200 words and get few comments which comprise of 300 words then 200+300=500.This will be the word count of the article which is a decent length.

2.Outdated Articles:

Sometimes we may write articles related to Technology updates. These articles related to updates may boost your traffic instantly but once when the update is outdated the article will remain as a scrap in your blog or website. You have to identify such articles and remove them immediately.

3.Articles with no Traffic at all:

There will be many articles on your website which don't get traffic at all or gets traffic very barely thereby adding no value to your website.Such articles should either be rewritten ,interlinked from the posts for which you get good traffic or must be removed.

4.Duplicate Titles

Duplicate Titles and Meta Descriptions must be avoided at any cost.Quite often an information may be outdated and you may come up with a new information on the same title. In such cases you should follow either of following cases.
  • Re-write the previous article with latest information(I don't recommend this because Google takes some time to re crawl an already crawled content and modify it in search results thereby you loose alot of traffic for a period of time).
  • Remove the previous article then write a new article. After that redirect the previous article url to the new article[Highly Recommended].
  • Write the new article with different keywords.
For example if you already wrote a article on "Google Panda Update 20" and this time you are writing a article on "Google Panda Update 21" then change the title and write it as "Google Rolled Out a New Panda Update 21" to show a diversification between the both titles.

5. Duplicate Meta Descriptions:

This is also same as the above explained scenario. To find out if your site has Duplicate Meta Description follow the below steps.
Html+Improvements
  • There you can find the number of duplicate Meta Descriptions on your website.
Google+Webmaster+Optimization

6.Achieve Pages:

Sometimes Google indexed the achieve pages of a blog/website thereby creating low quality content without your notice. To check the indexed pages in Google,go to google.com then type site:yoursite.com(Replace yoursite.com with your website address).

How To Remove Low Quality Content which is Indexed in Google?

Many bloggers asked me how to remove urls from google. So the intention behind making this post is to demonstrate them how to remove urls from Google as well.

1.No-Index those pages:

You can no-index such pages. If you no-index then google will stop crawling such pages.Pages to be no-indexed are
  • Achieve Links.
  • Comment Links.
  • Unwanted Labels.

2.Blocking unwanted urls with Robots.Txt:

robotstxtwrap
You can also block such unwanted urls from further indexing using robots.txt file. The following is an example of ideal robots.txt file.

3.Remove Manually:

If you want to remove specific url from google then its better to remove it manually. It will be removed from search results quickly.
Step To Manually Remove Url Using Google Webmaster Tool:
2.Open the site for which you have to operate.
3.Then click on Optimization on the Left side column.
4.In optimization choose Remove URL'S.
5.Then copy the link of url which you want to remove and paste it.

How to Recover from Google Panda Effect

google_panda-recovery-tips

Google Panda is one of the most discussed SEO Topics of 2011 and 2012.If you are new here "Google Panda is an Algorithm introduced by Google to improve search results quality".

What is Google Panda?

As I previously said Google Panda is an Algorithm introduced to improve search results. No doubt these algorithm definitely increased search quality results but for most of them this algorithm left tears in vain.Basically Google Panda is a domain level penalty,so if you blog has few bad posts then it will effect the whole blog like "one bad apple spoiling the whole bunch".I will be explaining how to get rid of this low quality content read on......

How to Identify if your site got effected with this Update?

As soon as the update rolled out you will either notice an increase in traffic ,decrease in traffic or no change in traffic.
  • No Change in Traffic:It means you didn't either loose or gain in this update and should be aware of the future updates.
  • Increase in Traffic:Increase in traffic shows that you are blessed by Google in this update. That means you are doing well as of now cheers :).
  • Decrease in Traffic:This is the most worried aspect. If your traffic decreased then you are one of the victim in this update and should work on recovery process.

What Kind of Websites get affected with Google Panda Algo?

  1. Websites with Low Quality Content(Often discussed as Thin Content).
  2. Websites which work as content farm.
  3. Websites with useless pages indexed in Google.
  4.  Websites with many advertisements(Especially Above the Fold).
  5. Websites with no proper design and SEO structure.
  6. Websites/Blogs which are not updated for a very long time.
  7. Websites with outdated articles.

How to Recover from Google Panda Update:

Honestly speaking its very easy to recover from Google Panda Effect.I am one of the victim of these Google Algorithm's.As soon as my site gets affected with these Algos I start working from that day and will mostly recover within a week(maximum a month).

1.Remove Low Quality Content from Google:

This is the first and primary step you have to do as soon as you are hit by Panda.Writing low quality content is like inviting Panda. Many web masters are not aware of Low Quality content.
  • Identifying low quality content is itself a big task. For this reason I have made a separate post on How To Identify and Remove Low Quality Content from Google-Refer that article.
  • Also Read:How to Remove Duplicate Content in Blogger.

2.Fix all Broken Links:

xenu
Broken links are one of the major issue of every website.Broken links not only effect blog SEO but also use experience. These links leaves the visitors with a 404 error page annoying the visitors who was searching for some useful data.
  • I personally use Xenu Tool to fix broken links and I recommend you the same.

3.Get Rid of Duplicate Content and Duplicate Meta Tags:

Duplicate content is another major issue.Sometimes web masters write same kind of update in multiple posts like "Google Panda Update 20" "Google Panda Update 21" and give same Meta Description and Keywords.Though both are different but contains almost same keywords in the title. This makes them look like Duplicate content in the eyes of Google.
So you have to either adapt different titles for both the posts or write all the updates in a single post. For more info refer my article on How to remove low quality content.

4.Remove Spammy and Unwanted Comments:

  • Only accept genuine comments on your blog.
  • Don't force others to comment on your blog just to increase comments count.
  • Allow only comments that add value to your post.
  • Good comments always add fuel to your post and thereby boosts your rank.
  • At the same time a spammy comments can harm your whole blog.
  • Also Read:Best Commenting System for Blogs.

5.Split content into Categories:

Now this is also a very important aspect that you have to implement on your website. If you have a blog or website, you write content on different topics like Gadgets,Blogging,Making Money Online etc. Then Split your content into categories.
  • Give proper label for each category.
  • Don't give more than three labels for each Category.
  • If you have already messed up your blog with many labels the its time for you to wake up and give proper and limited number of labels to each post.
  • If you implement the above mentioned steps then you will definitely notice a boost in your traffic.

6.Remove Unwanted Advertisements:

I see many people fill their blogs with lot of advertisements. Its wise to make 1000$ from only two Advertisements than 800$ from 5 Advertisements.
  • User experience is very important scenario in SEO.
  • If you annoy the visitor then he/she might not be sharing your content and wont visit your blog next time.To build an authoritative site referral traffic plays a key role.
  • Remove all unwanted ads especially ads above the fold.Google also introduced Page Layout Algorithm which penalises websites with more ads above the fold.Though CTR will be high for ads above the fold it will effect your blog traffic.
  • Don't use more than Two Ads above the fold.I prefer only one ad above the fold as I give more importance for my visitors.

7.Avoid Keyword Stuffing:

Keyword Stuffing was one of the mostly used method to rank well in Google. After wise Google Algorithm Updates google has thrown axe on all the spammers who used to rank high by keyword stuffing.I don't say you to stop keyword research but I suggest you to do it properly without interfering with user experience.
  • If you are new to Keywords then you should refer my post on Keyword Research Guide for Bloggers.
  • Use not more than 3-4 keywords in your title.
  • If your blog is new then focus on Long Tail Keywords.
  • Use more number different keywords in your post.Spin the keywords.
For example if you are writing a post on How To Make Money Online then don't use the same word repeatedly instead use earn money, make extra income, money making from home etc.Using different words not only keeps away from Panda but also gives good user experience.

8.Site Design:

Maintain a clean, easily navigable site design.I find many web masters using a lot of scripts to make their website look attractive.Such kind of sites takes hell lot of time to load and makes navigation cumbersome.Having a attractive site design is good but not at the cost of user experience.
  • Use a clean site design.
  • Put a menu bar for easy navigation.
  • Have atleast one search bar on your blog.
  • Easy social sharing buttons.
  • Good subscription box at proper place.

9.Active Social Media Presence:

social-media
Social media is the largest source of Referral Traffic.A blog must have good referral traffic to establish as brand.Be active on Social Networking sites like Facebook,Stumbleupon and Google+.After introducing G+,Google is allowing us to link our website with our Google Plus profile.New features like Google Authorship,Author Rank are associated with Google Plus.So be active on Google+.

10.Write a Reconsideration:

This is the last thing you have to do after you have done with all the above mentioned steps. There are cases where google pulled out penalty on few websites. So its worth writing a reconsideration.
  • Write a Reconsideration [Link].

In a Nutshell:

If you are hit by Google Panda then follow the below simple steps:
  1. Remove low quality content.
  2. Fix broken links.
  3. Write quality content.
  4. Remove unwanted Ads.
  5. Avoid Keyword Stuffing.
  6. Don't buy or sell links.
  7. No Index unwanted achieve pages.
  8. Remove Spammy and unwanted comments.
  9. Remove Duplicate Content and Duplicate Meta Tags.
  10. Write a reconsideration.

Surveys says that 68% of Web Masters cant recover from Google Panda Penalty:

panda-recovery-poll
A lot of surveys came out after the breach of Google Panda.Google is releasing a new panda update every month. So every website will get hit by these panda updates today or some other day.But 68% of them say that they cannot completely recover from Google Panda Penalty.Though 68% say they cant recover we have to look at the 20% people who have completely recovered from the Panda Penalty.
If others can recover you can recover too.

Conclusion:

Always focus on Quality not Quantity.User experience is the primary aspect which you have to focus on.Every blog will get hit by this algorithm updates now or some other day.Don't panic stay cool and work on to provide quality content to readers. If you had a hit then the above mentioned steps will recover your website completely.

Google EMD Update: Exact Match Domains No Longer Rank Well in Google

From the past few years Google has been continuously updating its algorithm to improve quality of search engine results.Google is releasing atleast one new algo update every week.
Update:Google confirmed that this update was overlapped with Google Panda 20

About the Google EMD Update:

Matt Cutts the head of Web Spam Team tweeted two tweets regarding the update. He mentioned exact match domain names with low quality content will no longer rank well in Google. He also mentioned that its going to effect only 0.6% of search queries.Though he said that its only 0.6% ,if you are in this category then it will effect you very badly.
Matt+Cutts+Tweet+1

Matt+Cutts+Tweet+2

How this update going to effect your site?

Although its a Exact Match Domain algorithm ,most of the sites with a primary keyword in their domain got effected very badly. If your are using a country level domain i.e .in , .pk etc then you might not see a significant impact as this update effects only US based results.
For example if your site is related to Android,Results,Particular Health niche etc,if you include any such keywords in your domain name then most likely you are going to be effected with this new algorithm.

How to Identify if your site got effected?

If you have seen any sudden drop in your traffic after September 27th then your site is most likely to be affected.
Reports say that many of the sites got effected with this update. Not only sites with low quality content but big networks also had a bad hit in this update.
According to SEO-MOZ reports there was a significant impact on exact match domains which you can see from the below graph.
emd-seomoz

How this update effected our site?

As its related to those blogs/websites with primary keywords in their domains we are safe from this update and I didn't notice any traffic drop or increase in traffic till now.
Update 1:Our site traffic increased by 20% after this update

How to Recover from this Update:

Unfortunately as this update is a domain level penalty its very difficult to recover from this update.Though you maintain quality in your content Google may not notice your efforts.

Few Tips to Recover from this update:

  • If your site has any low quality articles ,remove them or no-index those posts immediately.
  • If there are any articles with less than 300 or 400 words then either remove them or edit those article by adding more words which provides quality info to the readers.Write atleast 700-1000 words articles.
  • De-index all low quality urls which are indexed in google like archieve pages,Labels,Search Queries etc.You should also check out our Google Panda Recovery Guide.Though its unrelated to Google Panda its wise to follow those rules to stay away from future hits.
  • Write a reconsideration request to Google Webmaster Team.Must do this. There are cases where Google removed 50% penalty manually on few sites.
Try to write high quality articles and follow the above mentioned points and wait for a month or two.If your site still not getting good traffic from search engines then I suggest you to move to a new domain and start again with fresh-high quality content

.

Find out Which Google Update Affected your Website

  • Wondering which Google update effected your Blog?
  • Don't know whether you are effected by Google Panda or Penguin?
  • Are you finding it difficult to analyse which update exactly effected your website/Blog?
If any of the above questions is true then you are at the right place. Here we are going to introduce a tool which will show you which Google Update effected your Blog and the percentage of impact as well.So far the major Google Updates were the Panda ,Penguin , Page Layout Algorithm , Google EMD Update. The team from Delegator came up with a tool called AlgoSleuth which shows you the exact update which effected your blog and the intensity of impact as well.

How this Tool Works:

AlgoSleuth uses your Google Analytics API to fetch traffic reports for your blogs. This tool compares your traffic changes with the Google updates and will show you the intensity of the update on your website.

Steps to Use AlgoSleuth:

Watch the quick video demonstration:

  • Login to your Google Analytics Account which is linked with your website.
  • Go to this Link
  • Click on File then choose Make a Copy from the drop down menu.
  • Now a box will pop up asking to name the file. You can name anything like Google Updates Effect , Google Panda etc then hit ok.
  • A new windows pops up with the name of your File.
  • Then go to Tools then open Script Gallary.
  • Now in Script Gallary search for GA API and install the script.
  • Close it and now click on the Google Analytics Tab on the same document.
  • Then choose Find Profile / ids .
  • Now you need to authorise the script, Click Ok.
  • Then you have to Grant Access to run the script, allow the script to authorize.
  • Now again go to Google Analytics Tab and Click on Find Profile / Ids.
  • There you have to choose the website of your choice.
  • Now you will find two different values for each website namely Profile ID and ids.
  • Just copy the ids value. For example ga:58313596
  • Copy and paste this code to the in the 6th Step of the same document.
  • Then click on Google Analytics Tab of the same document and click Get Data.
  • This will take few seconds to run the script. The Report Status will be popped up.If you see a message saying that Script Done then everything has been done properly.
  • After that close that pop up and click on AlgoSleuth Data at the bottom of the doc.
  • Now you will see the Traffic reports of your website for specific Google Update.
If the percentage of change on specific update is indicated in GREEN means your website has an positive impact where as RED means you were negatively effected with the specific update.
Traffic fluctuations are very much common. If you notice a change of less than 5-10% then there is no need to worry at all.But if you had an negative impact of above 30% then you have to seriously work on fixing the issue.
  • If you are badly hit by Panda then you can check our article on How to Recover from Google Panda Effect.
If you face any trouble using this tool let us know in your comments. If you have already used this tool tell us your experience.

  • Click that and upload complete folder at once (you can go for file option also and upload each file separately). After clicking upload button a file window will be pop up where you can select your folder containing your files from your desktop.
  • After the folder is selected, on clicking ok a new dialogue box appear asking you about uploading setting. Make sure here the both check boxes should be unchecked. If you check the first check box than your HTML file will converted to Google Drive format and it won’t work as Webpage.
  • Click on start upload and wait for uploading files and folders
  • Make folder and all files available to public by right clicking the folder and navigate to share option. This step is important as if you don’t make your files public your files will not be available for preview that means no one other than you can see your files.
  • Save the changes and click done button.
  • Now open your folder and open your HTML file in Google Drive (You can double click your file and can locate open button on the right down corner of your screen).
  • File will be open in new tab where easily you can find a preview button. Click on preview button, your webpage will be open.
  • You can share this link among others now. Congratulation you just hosted a website using Google Drive for free.

Some Check List to avoid Errors

  • Make sure you don’t forget to uncheck upload option check boxes. Which will ask you to convert your file in Google Drive file format. No need to convert file in Google Drive file format.
  • Don’t forget to make your folder and files public by clicking on share button.
  • Don’t upload files with same name in a same folder. If you create two files with same name “Hello.html” in same folder, none of them will open or work.
  • Only 5 GB of data is allowed by Google as a free web space. So try to use that in optimized way. Also make sure that your web folder doesn’t exceed this limit of 5 GB. Beyond that limit you have to pay to Google for extra space.

How to Root and install Custom Recovery on any Android phone

How to Root and install Custom Recovery on any Android phone

As is the case with any smartphone, the initial ownership period is always the most exciting one. Your phone is new and you can’t wait to try out all the features it has to offer. After a while, though, you tend to get bored with it and that’s when you start thinking about buying a new one. Unfortunately, what many don’t realise is that at times, manufacturers aren’t able to exploit the phone's true capabilities due to various reasons and one of the best ways to achieve that is by rooting it (if it’s Android) or jailbreaking it (if it’s an iPhone). You may have heard these terms thrown around the Internet or amongst your friends and may have wondered what’s the big deal behind this. Well, today we’ll talk about what is rooting? How to root virtually any Android phone? And finally, installing a custom recovery and why you may need it.

As a special treat, we’ll also show you how to install Ice Cream Sandwich on your Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000. This still remains one of the most popular phones, especially with the modding community and thanks to them, they’ve achieved what Samsung refused to do. More on that later, though, first let’s get you rooted!

What is rooting and why do I need it?
At the core, Android is based on Linux and by default, it gives users only limited access to the system. The permissions are set to give users access to everything they would typically need and restrict them from accidentally modifying any system files or permissions, since a novice user can end up bricking their phone. Rooting your Android phone gives you Superuser access, which is similar to having an Administrator account in Windows. Armed with this, you can now perform system level updates; make changes in the UI through specialized apps; modify protected files, etc. With this you can now use Titanium Backup, which is one of the best backup apps in the Marketplace letting you backup virtually all your settings, data, etc, which otherwise is not possible. Adfree is another very handy app that lets you block ads in any free app you download and since it works at the IP address level, it doesn't slow down the system.

Rooting your phone will void your warranty, but luckily you can unroot it as well, should you choose to in the future. There are a bunch of ways to root your phone and each device sometimes has a specific method of rooting. We’ve already seen how to root the Galaxy Note and today we’ll take a look at two applications that will do just that, but for virtually any Android device.

Using SuperOneClick Download
This Windows-based application will root (almost) any Android phone in the market and is a good place to start. It works on Windows Vista and above, and requires you to have .NET Framework 2.0 and above pre-installed. For the full list of supported phones and instructions on how to use this on a Mac or Linux, read this thread on XDA. Once you download and install it, just follow these steps:

  • Put your phone in Debugging mode – For this, go to Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging. Some phones have this placed differently, so if you don’t find it here, just browse though all the sub-menus in settings, you will eventually find it.

  • Make sure the drivers for your phone are installed – If you received a CD with your phone then install it. If not, then go to the support section of your phones website and download it from there. In case you have a phone from a lower tiered company like Spice, Lava, etc then chances are you may not find drivers for it. Don’t worry, as OneClickRoot will download generic drivers for your phone.
  • Plug your phone to the PC via USB cable – Remember, not to “Turn on Mass Storage”, if you get the prompt. Just ignore it.
  • Run the software and it should now detect your phone. Then you simply click ‘Root’ and wait for it to complete. If Windows can’t detect the drivers for your phone, click the second tab on the program and click “Get Drivers”.

Your phone is now rooted! You’ll now have a new app in your list called ‘Superuser’. All that it does is keep a log of which applications require Superuser access.

The other application we mentioned was Unlock Root,  which works in a similar fashion. So, if for some reason OneClickRoot doesn’t work, you can give this a try. Now that we have rooted the phone, it’s time to install a custom recovery, so we can install custom ROMs and a lot more.

What is Custom Recovery and why do I need it?
Think of recovery as DOS mode in your PC. You access it to make changes to the system, apply updates, change file partitions, etc, which is normally not possible through the OS itself. All Android devices come with a recovery, but the stock one offers very basic options, which won’t let you install custom ROMs or make any other system level changes. For that, we have a custom recovery and the most popular one is the ClockworkMod Recovery or CWM.

A couple of things you can do with CWM are:

  • Make, restore and manage backups of your current ROM
  • Install a custom ROM or flash a kernel from internal storage
  • Mount, format your phones internal storage partitions
  • Create logs for error reporting

It’s ok, if you don’t know what some of them are, as you’ll seldom be using them. You can install CWM in different ways, but the simplest is through an app called ‘ROM Manager’. Here’s what you do:

  • Download ROM Manager from the Android Marketplace
  • Launch the app and the first option itself should say “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery”. Just press that and follow the instructions onscreen. In case you don’t have enough internal memory, you’ll be prompted to insert an SD card, so do that.
  • Be patient and let it work its magic. Once it’s done, you now have a custom recovery on your phone.

You can get into recovery mode a number of ways. Some phones have a button combo, which you boot into, but again, the simplest way is through ROM Manager. The second option says ‘Reboot into Recovery’, so just hit that and your phone should boot in to recovery mode.

After a reboot you won’t see the screen above directly, if you boot through ROM Manager (sometimes). Instead, you’ll have an Android logo with an exclamation mark. Don’t be alarmed; simply press the ‘Home’ button or any of the soft keys and you’ll see the main menu. You can scroll through the options using the volume keys and enter them using the ‘Home’ or ‘Power’ button. It’s a bit different for each device, but nothing that you can't figure out on your own. CWM will not work with every device, especially the lower end handsets from Spice, Lava, etc. The reason being they aren’t support by the developers, since they are relatively unheard of. However, almost every phone from a Tier 1 brand are supported.

Congratulations! You now have a rooted phone and a custom recovery installed. Don’t worry about loss of data as both these procedures will not affect any of the settings or data on your phone. The next step? How about installing a custom ROM? And what better to start with than Ice Cream Sandwich for the Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000!

Installing Ice Cream Sandwich on the Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000
Now that we’ve learnt how to root and install a custom recovery, it’s time to install Android 4.0 on your Galaxy S. The custom ROM comes from Team ICSSGS, which was initially started by Onecosmic. The latest build is RC 4.1 and so far, all the primary functions work just fine. If you encounter minor bugs or glitches, don’t freak out as they will be fixed in the upcoming builds. Here’s a list of things you’ll need:

  • Galaxy S GT-I9000 (Rooted and CWM installed)
  • ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.1_I9000 ROM (Download)

Once we have all the files, the next step is to make sure you backup all your data. You can use My Backup Pro or Titanium Backup to create a copy of your messages, call logs, media, etc. Get them from the Marketplace and back them up on your SD card. You can also install ROM Manager and create a backup of your current ROM, so you can revert back, should you feel the need to. Also, make sure your phone is at least 70 percent charged, before you proceed.

  • Dump the ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.1_I9000, Semaphore_ICS_0.7.5 Kernel and Wi-Fi fix zip files as is, into the root of your phone memory. Make sure it's not in any folder, but in the root directory.
  • Disconnect your phone and boot into recovery mode, either through ROM Manager or using the three-button combo. For this, you need to power down the phone first. Then, start it up by holding the volume up button + Home button and then press the power button. Once you see the Samsung logo, you can let go of all the buttons after a few seconds.
  • Once in Recovery mode, do a "Wipe data/factory reset" and "Wipe cache partition". Scroll up and down with volume keys and use home or power button for 'Enter'
  • Go to "Advanced" > "Wipe Dalvik cache" > "Go back"
  • Now choose "install zip from SD card" > "choose zip from sd card" > Select  “ICS_4.0.3_MR1-RC4.1_I9000”, which should be at the bottom and press enter. Select ‘Yes’ and let it do its thing.
  • The first boot will take some time. In case you get stuck at a boot loop (the colourful honeycomb flashing animation keeps going for 10min or more), remove the battery and put it back in. Then follow steps from 3 onwards and install the ROM again. It should boot just fine the second time. I faced this issue and it worked just fine the second time.
We’re almost there. Now that you have ICS up and running, you’ll notice that it’s slightly laggy when opening apps or in the animations. All this is fixed with Semaphore’s ICS Kernel. Here's what you do.

Flashing Semaphore’s Kernel
  • Boot into recovery mode and select “Semaphore_ICS_0.7.5 Kernel” through the same method we did for the ROM.
  • You don’t need to wipe any data or cache this time
  • Reboot
You’ll now notice a dramatic boost in the speed in the menus and apps are a lot more responsive. In case you happen to have the Wi-Fi bug, where Wi-Fi doesn’t work, then reboot into recovery and flash the “WiFi_fix.zip” file in the same fashion. If you need FM Radio, then install Spirit FM from the marketplace and you should be all set. Remember to change the country to India and audio method to 'Galaxy S ALSA' for it to work properly. I also strongly recommend you buy VooDoo Control Plus (if you haven't already). What this does is that it gives you full analog control over the Wolfson audio chip in the phone and improves the audio quality ten fold that will rival any portable amplifier in the market. Couple that with Poweramp and experience audio nirvana!
